Our Mission
Our vision is to become an active participant in shaping public policy.
Our goals stem from the need to stress the importance of possessing a thorough understanding of economic and political policy to succeed in the business world today.
WPBA seeks to provide students with:
- A forum for students to learn about, discuss and debate political and business issues.
- Open dialogue with political and business leaders.
- A platform to voice creative solutions for domestic and international political and business problems.
- Information about careers in public policy.
Our History
When Erol Toker and Anthony Orlando entered the Wharton School in the Fall of 2006, they were just like every eager freshman—ready to learn, interested in finance, and hoping to make a difference. Although they gladly dove into the world of investment banking and consulting, they found it discouraging that one of their other passions was not represented at Wharton: public policy.
This is not a problem known only to Wharton, as Professor Susan Wachter recalls, “When I went to work for the Clinton Administration, I had plenty of students who could analyze politics but none who could read data and give me a solid economic analysis.” Erol and Anthony realized that a Wharton education could be tremendously beneficial in the world of politics and economic policy, and they pushed to assemble a group of individuals with the tools to excel in the field and contribute to the future.
Today, the Wharton Politics & Business Association stands as a testament to their vision—that Wharton students can make a difference by bringing their scholarship to bear on public policy.
Join Us!
Policy is the major concern of WPBA. We focus on learning about the analysis and improvement of policy independently as well as in a group - our members, new and old, continually push each other to develop their abilities to unravel the intricasies of policy and then to use their own logic and understanding to improve upon it through weekly discussions, inside and outside of the conference room. Students who join WPBA as Policy Advisors will be able to participate in our featured events and even work with professors and speakers to learn about the origins and effects of policy in our modern world. We welcome those with little or no experience; we ask of those interested only for an open mind and constructive arguments.
WPBA also offers opportunities with our Events, Publications, Corporate Sponsorship and Marketing teams. We value creativity, efficiency, and anyone with a great idea for our club's future. Whether your strengths lie in writing, debating, organizing, designing, financing, or just learning, there is a place for you with WPBA.
